Geography Kit 3: Earth’s Composition
Lesson Intentions: The purpose of this kit is to give your child/student an impressionistic understanding of the physical make-up of Earth and its layers. They will gain the ability to identify and name the layers of the earth including inner and outer core, lower and upper mantle, crust, lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere; learn what the layers are made of; perform a small science experiment; refine visual acuity and fine motor skills; language development; and they will start to develop beginning research skills.
Materials included in lesson kit: “Planet Earth/Inside Out,” story book by Gail Gibbons; A set of laminated definition cards; labels to cut out; scissors; a glue stick; an illustrated lesson plan in an organized folder; 6 small containers of Play-Doh; 7 toothpicks; plastic knife; a paper plate; Deposit Layers experiment observation sheet; Scientific Method worksheet; Tectonic plate activity sheet; Earth’s Composition follow-up worksheet; Earth’s Composition color sheet; a fact sheet; a vocabulary worksheet; and the following objects for a small experiment: test tube, colorful sand (different colors in each kit), and colorful chalk powder (different colors in each kit). Not included: There is a second optional experiment in which you will need a bucket, rope, and water.
Group Kit Option: A group kit covers supplies for 2, 3, and 4 students. Each extra student receives an extra set of follow up papers, their own set of 6 Play-Doh's, toothpicks, and a paper plate. Choose from the drop-down menu.
