"The Out of my Mind" Literature Unit

Lesson Intentions: The "Out of my mind" Literature Unit includes work on each chapter reading including vocabulary words for each chapter and various activities. The activities include a vocabulary study for each reading and the following various activities: Writing prompts, poetry work (similes, haikus, and bio poems), sensory board, character match, challenge of the day, mini biography project, parts of a fish, planet activity, writing predictions, work with suffix's, quiz show activity, interview activity, S.T.E.A.L. character t-shirt directions, and an epilogue activity.

Material included: The "Out of my mind" Literature Unit includes 50 pages of follow up work, a book(s), a work journal, color pencils, and a pencil sharpener.

“Out of my Mind” is a book about Melody Brooks, an eleven-year-old girl with cerebral palsy. She can't walk, talk, or write—but she has a brilliant mind and a photographic memory. Melody has spent most of her life unable to communicate her thoughts, which leads many people—including doctors and teachers—to underestimate her intelligence. Her world begins to change when she receives a device called a Medi-Talker, which allows her to speak for the first time. With this new voice, Melody joins mainstream classes and even competes for a spot on the school’s academic team. Themes: The power of communication, misunderstanding and bias toward disabilities, perseverance and self-worth, and the importance of inclusion and empathy.
