“Misty of Chincoteague” Literature Unit
“Misty of Chincoteague” tells the story of the wild ponies who live on Assateague Island. Every year, the island’s wild ponies are rounded up and swum across to Chincoteague for Pony Penning Day. Siblings Paul and Maureen Beebe dream of owning the Phantom, and they work hard to earn the money to buy her at the auction. The story follows the siblings’ adventures as they care for wild ponies, discover the challenges of taming a wild horse, and learn the values of responsibility, sacrifice, and love.
Lesson Intentions: “Misty of Chincoteague” Literature Unit includes vocabulary words for each chapter reading with a different activity. The activities include vocabulary words, personification work, map making, parts of a galleon, a literature map, writing prompts, diamante poetry writing, "parts of a horse", word search, character sketch, dream board, a character silhouette, diorama, and story board.
