The "One And Only Ivan" Literature Unit

The "One And Only Ivan" Literature Unit includes 25 pages of follow up work, a book(s), a work journal, color pencils, and pencil sharpener.  Each chapter reading includes vocabulary words for each chapter with a different activity. The activities include noun and adjective work, writing prompts, metaphor work, compare and contrast work, animal report, homophone work, simile work, two art projects, working with acrostic poetry, and writing predictions.

The One and Only Ivan is a heartwarming middle‑grade novel by Katherine Applegate about Ivan, a gentle silverback gorilla who has lived for 27 years in a small enclosure inside the Exit 8 Big Top Mall. Ivan spends his days watching humans, drawing pictures, and sharing quiet companionship with his friends Stella, an elderly elephant, and Bob, a stray dog. His world changes when Ruby, a young elephant, arrives, inspiring Ivan to confront his memories of the wild and find the courage to seek a better life for her. The story explores themes of friendship, captivity, hope, and the power of art.
